Selena Gomez loves a themed manicure. With the help of nail artist to the stars and her go-to Tom Bachik, Gomez’s mid-length almond-shaped digits often set the next nail shop trends: the toasted manicure, the pink mocha nails, the red carpet-ready peach champagne nails for the Oscars, and a twist on the bridal set to marry Benny Blanco just last month. Sometimes, she’ll even combine two trends in one.
This week, the musician, actor, and Rare Beauty mogul opted to amp things up for Thanksgiving, choosing a much more colorful, opulent set of decals than we’ve come to expect from her. While Gomez never sticks to one mani for too long, they’re usually all well within her polished, elegant, pared back style. This time, though, she embraced the drama and romance with a set that Bachik shared was Romeo + Juliet inspired, naming it the “jeweled icon mani.” Each nail was painted a different color and set with Swarovski crystals and jewels.
The thumb is blood red with a 3D gold and crystal cross, the pointer is white with geometric emerald-centered star, and the middle painted a blushing pink with a ruby and gold-edged Sacred Heart. The ring finger is nude, studded with pearls, and red, blue, and green jewels set in gold, with the baby finger a glittery purple-pink. It’s a hyper-detailed, Renaissance style nail set that shows of Bachik’s nail artistry and precision.
It’s super romantic, too, given the secret meaning behind the gems. Bachik—who used his own brand Click Colors, and Aprés—added ruby and aquamarine stones to each nail, which are Gomez and Blanco’s birthstones respectively. Ruby, because Sel is a Cancer sign, represents loyalty and creativity, while Blanco’s aquamarine (as a Pisces) reflects calmness, courage, and inner strength.
These stones were also incorporated into the newlyweds’s custom wedding rings. Working with Jacob & Co., the couple opted for 18 carat yellow gold wedding bands engraved with their wedding date and that feature these two tiny, delicate stones on the inside.
As the festive season amps up, are we witnessing the death knell of the naked manicure, rung by Selena Gomez? More and more, the celebrity set is returning to extra elaborate and ornate nail styles: Kylie Jenner, for one, opted for an on-trend, cozy season-appropriate plaid set, while foliage nails, nail sculptures, and jelly designs are everywhere. Whichever nail camp you fall into, Selena Gomez goes to show that stepping out of your beauty comfort zone can yield super sweet results.
