The superstar made a bold statement during her musical performance.
Lady Gaga arrived at this evening’s Oscars in typical Gaga fashion—that is to say, scene-stealing and clad in full-tilt glam. The pop star opted for dramatics, leaning into the spectacle of her fresh-off-the-runway Versace dress with a saturated smokey eye, pull of pink blush, high-shine carmine lip, and a rooty French braid. But for her onstage appearance, Gaga stripped down, ditching all traces of her full face for a nearly-naked complexion—and entirely show-stopping—moment.
For a performance of her song “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, Gaga kept the braid but appeared to rinse off the rest, trading her sheer and structured gown for a simple black t-shirt, jeans, and Converse high tops. The effect was powerful and in keeping with Gaga’s equally raw message.
“I think that we all need each other—we need a lot of love to walk through life. And we all need a hero sometimes,” she said during her personal introduction. “There are heroes all around us in assuming place, but you might find that you can be your own hero even if you feel broken inside.”
