The most popular blush trend in recent years has been a look reminiscent of a light sunburn from a week spent somewhere in the Aegean. Blush was applied high, often right under the eye, and draped across the bridge of nose—as though you’d been caught dozing under a gloriously warm sun. In a word: romantic. Even more so knowing you weren’t actually inflicting any UV damage onto your skin. This year, Dua Lipa has introduced her own iteration of the beauty trend: the goggle tan blush.
In pictures from the first night of her Radical Optimism tour in Melbourne, Lipa’s blush sat noticeably lower down her face, leaving a lighter, brighter area around her eyes. The burnished peach shade still tickled her nose and extended along her cheekbones, but the placement created the same ruddy glow you might get from a week on the slopes.
The look—the work of her frequent collaborator and celebrity make-up artist Katie Jane Hughes—is the most fun blush trick we’ve seen so far this year. Hughes, who is known for her flushed cheek and smudged lip looks and her affinity for rich, dewy colours, has also worked with Hailey Bieber and Lily Allen.’
While there’s no tutorial yet (though Hughes does post regular how-to videos on her Instagram), we can glean a little knowledge from her past posts. Hughes often lays a veil of setting powder onto skin before applying a strong or bright powder blusher. This, she says, gives a smoother application and “cuts the power… making it a little bit less pigmented”. The main benefit is that it stops the blush from sticking to certain areas, which can leave the skin looking patchy. “Just powder the crap out of your cheeks before using powder blush,” she says in another video, showing how she uses the same brush for her face powder as she does for her powder blush.
