If the first Wicked press tour was all about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s commitment to pink and green (in honour of their respective characters, Glinda and Elphaba), Grande’s Wicked: For Good wardrobe is all about trophy vintage. So far, the actor and singer has already sported a ’50s Gilbert Adrian gown for the London premiere, a ’50s Lilli Diamond opera coat and dress for a Paris screening, and ’90s Bob Mackie for the Wicked: One Wonderful Night special.
Grande’s recent archival streak has coincided with a return to her partnership with image architect and vintage obsessive Law Roach. “Law and I have always had such a special connection as humans, as Cancers, and of course as fashion lovers,” the actor recently told Vogue. “It just feels so aligned and happy-making to be doing this together. He is the best in the world at what he does, and also just a deeply good person, and I love him dearly.”
While Grande and Roach are clearly on a roll, it’s not the first time Grande has displayed her love of vintage on the red carpet. During last year’s Wicked press tour, the actor was spotted in a number of rare archival pieces, including a pink strapless gown from autumn/winter 1982 for an appearance on SNL, and a striped set from Vivienne Westwood’s autumn/winter 2005 collection.
